Names on a Windscreen

Back then cars were full of rust - perpetual non-starters.
Fitting an electric aerial set you apart from the rest.
Nought to sixty in about thirty-five seconds.
Nevertheless, you were proud of your Hillman Imp crest.

Furry dice hanging from the rear-view mirror.
Beaded seats and a hula dancer on the dashboard too.
Proudly displaying an AA Badge and go-faster stripes.
Names on the windscreen saying it was ‘Shirley and Hugh’.

It was your first car and your pride and joy.
You polished it within an inch of it’s life.
But when it went to the dead car’s graveyard.
Your next car windscreen said, ‘Man and Wife’.
